Like many other cities in the world, Bhuj faces the problem of unavailability of freshwater. In Bhuj the source of water supply is mainly groundwater, as there are no perennial rivers flowing in or around the city, and this exerts pressure on ground water resources. All issues - of managing urban water supply, waste water, storm water and urban space can be viewed in an integrative manner by looking at urban areas as watersheds. Thus, one way to resolve the above issues and attain sustainability is watershed development. Such a perspective would incorporate issues such as pollution of water resources, surface run-off, rainwater harvesting from urban structures, etc. Towards this goal, three organizations - Alchemy Urban Systems Pvt. Ltd., Hunnarshala and Arid Communities and Technologies (ACT) have come together to study and analyze the existing situation in Bhuj and develop a watershed management plan for the region. |
